HistoricalDevolopment
Thecolourofcommercialhoneys,whichrangesfrompaleyellowthroughambertodeepredorevenblack,isanimportantfactorinthemarketingofhoney.Inrecognitionofthisfact,anofficialmethodforcolourgradingofhoneywasdevelopedusingPfundvaluesinmillimetres.TheoriginalInstrumentusedtodeterminePfundvalueswasthePfundwedgecomparatorwithawedgeofamberglass,awedge-shapedcellforholdingthehoneysampleandamillimetrescalewithapointertoindicatethewedgepositionswhereacolourmatchisobtained.
In1927theUSDepartmentofAgricultureestablisheditsowncolourclassificationforextractedhoneybasedonPfundvaluesasshowninTable1.

TherehavebeengeneratedconversionfiguresforPfundvaluesintocolourstandardsandcustomiseddiscsforhoneyclassificationcoveringanyrequiredrangeofPfundvaluesareavailable.Specialrequirementsoftenresultfromdifferencesinvariousgeographicalmarkets;forinstance,ItalianacaciahoneyisaverylighthoneysoanappropriatehoneygradingdiscwillincludeagreaterselectionofPfundvaluesatthelowendoftherange.
