Whenthemitecanonlyreproduceinsealedbroodcells,thereisahyphotesisthatwecanreducethenumberofmiteswithashortercappingstage.Whensmallerbees,(ApisceranaandApismelliferacapensis),aremoreresistanttothemite,thisresearchaimtofindoutifitispossibletogetshortercappingstagewithsmallercellsinEuropeanbeecolonies.
Threedifferentfoundationswereused,640,770,and900cells/sq.dm.ThefoundationswereintroducedinthreedifferentcoloniesattheUniversity,andthepostcappingstageandtheweightofthebeeswerecompared.
AtGotland,theplaceinSwedenwithmostinfestedcolonies,thefoundationswereintroducedintofivecoloniesusingthetrappingcombmethod.ThencellswereopenedandinspectedforVarroamitesineachcomb.Theoffspringofthemothermitesweredividedindifferentgroupsandcomparedbetweenthedifferentcellsizes.

Nodifferencecouldbefoundinpostcappingstagesbetweenthecellsizes.Therewasatendencytosmallerbeesinsmallercells.Comparisionofthereproductionofthemitesindifferentcellsizesshowednosignificantdifferencesifthematerialwasdividedintotwogroups,fertileandnonfertilemothermites.Thereweresignificantdiffrerencesbetweencellsizesinoffspringcompositionbuttheresultdonotindicatethatthereproductionofmiteswassubstantiallyinfluencedbycellsizeonworkerbeebrood.
