Intwoexperiments,theinfluencefromtrappingcombtecniqueonthenaturalmortalityofmitesfrominfestedhoneybeecolonieswasinvestigatedinaNordicclimate.

Twoapiaries,AandB,with17colonieseachwereused.Thenaturalmortalityofmiteswasfollowedinbothapiariesfrommid-Maytomid-Novemberwithvaryingintervalsbetweeneachcounting.InapiaryAameshbottomwasusedallowingpracticallyallmitesfallingfromthebeestobecounted.InapiaryBaplasticscreentocollectmites,covering53%ofthebottomwasplacedinthecenterofthebottomboard.

ThefirsttrappingcombwasintroducedonJune20inapiaryB,andJune21inapiaryA.Thetrappingdevicewasacagebuiltfromplasticqueenexcluders.InapiaryAthemethodofMaulwithninedaysbetweeneachcombshiftwasused.

ThepresentedresultssupportthehypothesisthatthetrappingcombsystemcouldbesufficientinaNordicclimate.ThisiscontrarytotheresultspresentedbyMaul,wherethemitepopulationinsouthernGermany,judgedfromthemitemortality,isallowedtoincreasesubstantiallyafterthetrappingcombperiod.
